As long as I can remember dogs dominated my life. My first steps – before I could speak my first words – drew me to any dog coming up. I never met an unfriendly dog! “My” first love was a black German Shepherd “Sultan” which lived a flat below ours. Not being able to resist my and his eyes his owners and my parents allowed me to walk him. I never understood the rage of dog owners coming along…Sultan when sitting nearly came up to my ears with the tips of his. Of course he was a fighter and I always kept the nearest fence in view where to tie him up when other dogs approached. If I had no chance to do so, he used to bounce like a ball on one spot barking furiously, but he never pulled me off my feet. My world collapsed when his owners moved and took him with them. When we moved into a flat with our own garden finally I was allowed to have my first own dog – a Collie. I trained my dogs for Schutzhund, bred a few litters, visited dog shows and worked for the breed club. After the death of my last bitch a time without dogs followed due to a full time office job. In those years all my free time went into studying cynology. Today I am possessed by a most lovable Whippet called Nikki.
In all those years I was able to learn a lot about dogs, I travelled all over the world in search of understanding their special appearance and behaviour.
1976 the famous German publisher KOSMOS approached me to write a book on British Sheepdogs (including the Collie). I accepted under the condition to supply my own photos since then there were mostly studio shots of untypical specimen available. So I started my dog photography career.
KOSMOS were pleased with my work and used many photos to illustrate their new series of dog breed books as well as the standard work of Dr. Räber’s Enzyklopädie der Hunderassen.
In 1977 I started publishing my own magazine Collie Revue and in 1997 Beardie Revue.
